THE CUSTOM SPOTLIGHT INTERVIEW
We got hold of Boskoes Toys to discuss being this weeks Spotlighted Customizer.
I'm here with Danielle Palmer, the talented artist behind the Boskoes monicker! Welcome to the Custom Spotlight Interview. Tell us a little bit about your work with action figures.
Q. How did you get into the field and what is the attraction to action figures for you?
A. “ I have always been one of those kids that loved toys, of all sorts, Im not a "tomboy" but I always found myself have loads more fun playing G.I. Joe and Transformers than I ever did playing Barbies. “
“ My Ex-partner was a collector of action figures and I started out by changing or fixing things that he had, or wanted to have in his collection. ”
Q. Customizing usually involves a lot of painting, sculpting, and use of tools to modify or fabricate pieces. Do you have any history in artistic creation or was Customizing more of a learning experience?
A. “ My 1st grade teacher wrote my mother a letter stating that I was "too creative" and I have always been one of those kids, that had to modify things to make them ‘better’ I remember actually being banned from my friends’ barbie dolls, apparently I thought her hair was too long and that she could afford to show a little more leg. I spent a few years building clay figures just for fun before I realized that there was a whole market out there that was perfect for me to become a part of. “
Q. How would you best describe your artistic process?
A. “ Im pretty manic, I start a bunch of stuff at once then I end up putting focus on one thing until it's complete. Even if it means Im up too late. I really enjoy the sculpting and painting. Not so much into the photo and editing thing. And, yes, I am aware that I’m not so great at the whole posing thing! “
Q. What types of paint, sculpting media, or special tools do you commonly use or would recommend?
A. “ I have used quite a few paints over the years I love Testors (acrylic), I mix it with almost any other paint I’m using (it always seems to dry the best). I am also a real big fan of Chroma Color. My best friend is my exacto knife I do almost all my sculpting with it. Lots of nail files and buffers, and a homemade tool out of AVES. “
Q. What inspires you on your designs?
A. “ I had a partner for a long time and I used to just sort of go with his ideas, so now Im gathering inspiration from other customizers and honestly just working on things that I've kinda always wanted to do, I don't believe that EVERYTHING needs to be 100% comic accurate to be cool. “
Q. Is there a scale or toy line you prefer to work with and why?
Q. Are there any particular references you use more than others?
A. “ Not really. “
Q. Is there another Customizer who inspires or inspired you when you began Customizing?
A. “ My first inspiration was Jin Saotome, and he was really helpful when I first started out. I appreciate everyone's work I think that we all have someting different to offer. Im a huge fan of Fast Freddie, Red Rebel, Frenzy Rumble, Encline Designs and Loosecollector, but there are so many amazing artists out there it's impossible to name everyone that has inspired me over the years. “
Q. What is your favorite Custom Action Figure made by someone else?
A. “ Today it's Frenzy Rumble's Galvatron. “
Q. Do you have a personal favorite of your own work?
A. “ I worked on him alone, I think Robots are swell! He was made of mostly scraps and metal. Painting him was super fun! “
Q. What was your biggest learning experience you've had while customizing that you're comfortable mentioning and was there something you'd do differently now?
A. “ That if the universe says you need a, ‘do over’, then you should take it! “
Q. Do you do mostly commissioned pieces or make whatever characters are inspiring you at the moment?
A. “ I think it is about 50/50 right now, but... “
Q. Where's the best place online or locally for fans to see more of your work? (Include website addresses and contact information here).

Q. As a part of the Customizing Community are there any tips, techniques, or words of wisdom you'd like to pass on for those starting out?
A. “ Pay very close attention to your peers that’s where you will get your best inspiration, and that there is always more to learn. “
Q. Before we go, are you currently working on any customs that we can watch out for you'd like to mention to the readers?
A. “ I just finished an Udon Taskmaster, and I am currently working on a Deadpool, Shredder, Nightwing, Iron Man, and a special set of Thundercats. “
